Relief Sculpture
The Elemental Formations exhibition marked a pivotal moment in my sculptural journey.
Presented in collaboration with Jasmax Architecture, this series of wall-mounted geometric reliefs was conceived as a response to the architectural nuances of the exhibition space—a long corridor culminating in a stairwell. This unique setting inspired a collection that balances harmony and tension, structure and spontaneity.
Drawing inspiration from the Brazilian Neo-Concretism and Zero movements, I aimed to distill complexity into clarity. Each piece was meticulously crafted using materials such as aluminium, brass, lucite, and textiles. The juxtaposition of contemporary and traditional materials—like the modernity of lucite against the timelessness of brass—allowed me to explore contrasts: solid versus ethereal, opaque versus transparent, masculine versus feminine.
The process was both challenging and enlightening. I limited my palette to a monochromatic scheme to emphasise form and texture, allowing the materials' intrinsic qualities to shine. This restraint fostered a cohesive body of work where each sculpture stands independently yet contributes to the overarching narrative.
Exhibiting at Jasmax was more than showcasing art; it was about creating a dialogue between the sculptures and their environment. The architectural space didn't just house the artworks—it interacted with them, enhancing their presence and inviting viewers into a meditative experience.
Through Elemental Formations, I sought to offer a contemplative space where viewers could engage with the subtle interplay of materials, forms, and the voids between them. It was an exploration of balance, both in the physical assembly and the metaphysical resonance of the pieces.
